Honors Academy at Cedar Crest is an open enrollment public charter school in the state of Texas. The program is fully accredited and is recognized by the Texas Education Agency.
Mission Statement The mission of Honors Academy at Cedar Crest is to address the emotional and academic needs of each student, and raise his or her individual self-esteem by providing an academic program focused on success. This unique program empowers students to be advocates in their own learning process, and to meet their needs for graduation. The curriculum provided at Cedar Crest stimulates students to voice their thoughts, ideas, and emotions so that they learn the value of education.
Students Served The Honors Academy serves the children and adolescent clients of the Cedar Crest Foundation, an on-premise psychiatric facility. These students are diagnosed with severe behavioral problems that require a more restrictive setting than the public school classroom. The school serves an average of 45 students a day, who often display aggression toward others or themselves. The length of enrollment for each student varies, as attendance is based on the current Cedar Crest census. The means that each student has different needs, which are addressed, based on the different lengths of stay.
Educational Program Description The Honors Academy at Cedar Crest curriculum incorporates the arts in the learning process. Personal expression is crucial to these students, and they are given opportunities to explore their understanding of life through art. The core curriculum is computerized course work and test materials on the software program PLATO. This program allows students to complete their course work in a self-paced, self-directed environment. This program enables high school students, who lack credits required for graduation, to continue their studies.
Educational Program Enhancement The Honors Academy at Cedar Crest has identified two specific areas for continued development. Cedar Crest desires to expand the on-campus work program to give students the chance to explore vocational possibilities that promote a sense of self-worth and prepare them for the "real world." Secondly, Cedar Crest wants to further provide opportunities for artistic education Students who are turned off by traditional styles of teaching can be inspired through art, drama, and music.
