Charter schools were created to: (1) improve student learning and achievement, (2) increase learning opportunities for students who are at risk of academic failure and are under-served by the traditional school system, (3) encourage use of innovative teaching methods, (4) create new and challenging professional opportunities for teachers and administrators, (5) provide parents and students with expanded choices in the types of educational opportunities that are available within the public school system, (6) provide schools with a method to change from rule-based to a performance based accountability system for students, teachers, and administrators.

 

 

In what way are charter schools similar to or different from other public schools?

Charter schools, like traditional public schools, are required to focus instruction and learning on meeting the high standards set by the state of Texas &endash; Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.

Unlike traditional public schools, charter schools have complete flexibility on how to achieve standards and student learning results. Varied instructional strategies, greater use of technologies, hands-on academic and vocational learning experiences and a strong focus on the whole child are characteristic of most charter schools.

 

 

Do parents have to pay for a charter school education?

No, charter schools are a public school. Therefore, there is no fee, no tuition, no membership fees and no screening process. The funds would have flowed to the local school district follow the child to the school of choice.
