The History of Honors Academy...

In September of 1998, Honors Academy was granted a charter by the state of Texas to operate a public charter school. The original charter design delivered instruction over the Internet to provide a Virtual School in individual homes. Due to the conflicts with state regulation, the charter was expanded to include individual learning communities or small campuses. With the original geographic boundary of the entire state, Honors Academy developed partnerships with existing community groups and residential treatment centers in several areas of the state. The 1999-2000 school year, which was Honors first, was a year of rapid expansion. Opening the year with seven (7) original campuses and an enrollment of 400, the charter quickly grew to ten (10) campuses and a year-end enrollment of almost 900.

Honors Academy expanded its partnership to include faith-based community organizations and adopting private schools whose mission is to reach special needs students. In August of 2000, Honors Academy opened with a total of fifteen (15) campuses and an initial enrollment of 1350. Honors Academy is expected to reach its cap of 2000 students by the end of 2000-2001. With great hopes for the future, a request will be made to the Texas Board of Education in the spring of 2001 to increase the charter cap from 2000 to 5000 students.
