Honors Academy is an innovative self-paced learning environment designed to meet the needs of today's special learners. Using the best in technology-based learning systems, Honors Academy's unique curriculum integrates technology, projects, state adopted text and traditional instructor led methods to facilitate students functioning to their individual highest potential. This allows students, on an individual subject-by-subject basis, to maximize their learning effort. Students progress at a more rapid rate in areas of personal strength and move more slowly in areas of individual challenge allowing for through comprehension. This method is excellent for serving a diverse population of students and is particularly adept in educating the special needs learner. Honors Academy serves students at both ends of the spectrum with a special heart for those students considered "at-risk". By partnering with local colleges and universities, accelerated students earn both high school and college credit simultaneously. Other programs focus on students whose educational career may have been hindered by life circumstances to get them back on track and successfully complete their high school career and prepare them for post secondary education or a solid career. Honors employs specialists to serve its special populations such as Limited English Proficient students and Special Education students. As well, Honors Academy servers its students with a complete Vocational staff to prepare them for the world of work or post secondary studies. In May of 1998, Honors Academy was granted a charter by the state of Texas to operate a public school. The original charter design delivered instruction over the Internet to provide a Virtual School in individual homes. Due to conflicts with state regulation, the charter was expanded to include individual learning communities or small campuses. The 1999-2000 school year, Honors' first, was a year of rapid expansion. Opening the year with 7 original campuses and an enrollment of 400, the charter quickly grew to 10 campuses and a year-end enrollment of almost 900. Honors Academy expanded its partnership to include faith-based community organizations and adopting thriving private schools whose mission is to reach special needs students. In August 2000, Honors Academy opened with a total of 15 campuses and an initial enrollment of 1350. Additionally, Honors was proud to plant one its original campuses in their own charter. Honors Academy is expected to reach its cap of 2000 by the end of 2000-2001. With great hopes for the future, a request will be made to the Texas Board of Education in the spring of 2001 to increase the charter cap from the current 2000 to 5000.
